AS I TAKE YOUR HAND AND LEAD YOU TO THE DANCE FLOOR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On October 23, Oni Press will release the third volume in their magical comedy series Spell Checkers. Written by Jamie S. Rich, with art by Nicolas Hitori de and Joëlle JonesSPELL CHECKERS VOLUME 3: CARELESS WHISPER caps the first trilogy by ringing out the school year, sending its teen witch anti-heroines to prom.

“When Spell Checkers started back in the day, we always had an eye on doing three,” Rich commented. “The stories were designed with that in mind. While each volume reads as its own thing, as a package, you’re getting an entire school year. Given how much of what happens hinges on the vicious social landscape that makes high school what it is, it just seemed natural to send the girls to the big dance.”

Originally conceived by Rich and JonesSpell Checkers has often been described as “Mean Girls with magic.” The comics follow three teenage witches–Cynthia, Kimmie, and Jesse–who rule their school with wicked spells and even wickeder one-liners. “I wanted to go with a pretty basic formula for rude comedies,” Rich said.

“Though the central characters may be on top of the heap, they are also pretty stupid and deserving of every comeuppance they get. At the same time, they’re the only ones who fail to see how badly they keep messing up. The plot of CARELESS WHISPER actually centers on them paying for past misdeeds, with a rival we’ve seen before teaming up with one we haven’t to cause all kinds of trouble on the dance floor.”

Rejoining Rich for this graphic novel are the series artists, Joëlle Jones and Nicolas Hitori de. As with the first two books, Jones provides the cover and flashback sequences, while Hitori de draws the main timeline. “It’s always fun to see how our work goes together,” Hitori de says. “Joëlle’s style is more realistic than mine, so it’s a bit backwards that she draws all the characters when they are younger, but  it’s also sort of humorous. By the time the girls are in high school, they are, for lack of a better term, more ‘cartoony.’ They don’t live in the real world.”

Cover colors by Warren Wucinich.

“Writing Spell Checkers is a bit of a juggling act,” Rich added. “On one hand, you have these girls who are kind of cruel and never really learn anything, and on the other, I do want people to like them and care about what happens to them. Writers say this all the time and it sounds dopey, but the girls really did take on more dimension the more I hung around with them. The secret is that, deep down, they care the most about the things they claim to care about the least. Hence, in CARELESS WHISPER, Cynthia reveals that she wants to be Prom Queen. No tricks, no magic, she wants to win that crown. But, you know, famous last words….”

“People always ask how Jamie can write such bratty teenage girls,” Hitori de said. “I answer, ‘Are you kidding? Spend five minutes with him, he’s a jerk.’ But just like he does in real life, he makes me laugh when I read the scripts. The difference is, at least he’s not insulting me!”

“Well, except for that bonus comic I had Chynna Clugston Flores draw,” Rich replied. “That was written with the express intention of insulting you.”

“Mon dieu!”

SPELL CHECKERS VOLUME 3: CARELESS WHISPER goes on sale from Oni Press on October 24 and retails for $11.99.  It has 152 black-and-white pages and is intended for teen audiences and older.

New comics interview webseries 'From the Gutters' debuts October 4th.  Hosted by Jamie S. Rich.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

More info: fromthegutters.show@gmail.com

After weeks of teasing about the content of their new program “From the Gutters,” producers Ryan McCluskey and Martin Vavra are ready to unveil the full content of their online series. A comic book-themed talk show, “From the Gutters” is set to debut on October 4. The show is hosted by well-known comics writer Jamie S. Rich, and the guest for the debut episode is Matt Wagner, the creator of “Mage” and “Grendel,” who also currently writes “The Shadow: Year One” for Dynamite Entertainment and “The Tower Chronicles” for Legendary.

“We knew we wanted to start big,” McCluskey said, “and there is no bigger name in comic book circles than Matt Wagner. Plus, he and Jamie have a relationship that dates back to when Jamie was just a reader, and it’s great to see two friends and colleagues sit down and talk shop.”

“From the Gutters” episode 1 will appear on the show’s dedicated YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/fromthegutters, as well as via the website, fromthegutters.com. After the October 4 debut, the next eight episodes will debut weekly, released every Friday through October and November.

“The Wagner episode will establish our basic routine,” explained Vavra, who also serves as the show’s cameraman and editor. “Each interview will be edited down to at least two 10-15 minute segments, with some having a third bonus segment, usually for interview sessions where we were able to shoot in the artist’s studio.”

The shorter segments will be followed a week later by the full version of the interview, allowing viewers to eavesdrop on the longer conversation between guest and host.

“In the case of Wagner,” McCluskey added, “we had a full day where he cooked for us, chatted about his passion for the kitchen and for comics, and then took us down into his office to take us through some of his process. There were so many good moments, it was hard to pick and choose. That’s why we decided that, with every new episode, ‘From the Gutters’ fans will also be treated to the extended cut of a previous favorite.”

That means the uncut Matt Wagner interview will be online October 11 at the same time as the second episode with Becky Cloonan debuts.

“Becky is a powerhouse in her own right,” Rich said, “and it was fun to chat with someone who is a little bit newer to the business. She had already finished her run on ‘Conan’ and was just starting ‘True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys’ at the time, and she had yet to win her Eisner for her own comic ‘The Mire.’ It’s like we knew her when....”

Future guests include Michael Allred (“Madman,” “FF”), Ming Doyle (“Mara”), Ted Naifeh (“Courtney Crumrin”), Dave Stewart (“Hellboy”), Michael Avon Oeming (“Powers,” “The Victories”), Eric Stephenson (publisher of Image Comics, writer of “Nowhere Men”), and Bob Schreck (editor at Legendary Comics).

“Our intent with ‘From the Gutters’ is to peel back the page a bit and show you the creators behind your favorite comics,” Rich concluded, “both as artists and as people. We’re going to dig down to uncover the motivations behind choosing comics as a profession, and the personalities that bring these stories to life, so that we can start to see the art and the artist as a singular unit.”

HERE SHE COMES, YOU'D BETTER WATCH YOUR STEP

 For Immediate Release - September 27, 2013

SECOND IT GIRL & THE ATOMICS PAPERBACK COLLECTS THE REST OF BELOVED SERIES

Jamie S. Rich and a cadre of artists top off their acclaimed year-long run on the It Girl and the Atomics series with the second trade paperback collection. It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat collects issues #7 through #12, drawn by Mike Norton (Revival) and Natalie Nourigat (The Thrillling Adventure Hour), with a special spooktacular appearance by Chynna Clugston Flores. The book will be published by Image Comics on October 2, 2013.

It Girl originally appeared in Michael Allred’s late 1990s comics series The Atomics, and later as a cast member in Madman Atomic Comics. This is her first solo series, as well as the first fully sanctioned Madman spin-off. It Girl’s superpowers are that she can touch any object and adopt its attributes, becoming “it.”

“I’m extremely proud of the work we did on these comics,” Rich said. “The series garnered what are so far the best reviews of my career, and it’s become the first thing people want to talk to me about when I’m at conventions. Having the whole thing together in two complete books is extremely gratifying. It’s a great way to end the project, and we want to reward our readers by giving them a special package.

In addition to all the stories from the individual comics, It Girl and the Atomics also has all the cover art by the original creators of It Girl, Madman masterminds Michael and Laura Allred. Bonus content includes brand-new pin-ups by Brian Churilla, Ming Doyle, Megan Levens, George Kambadais, Monica Gallagher, Brennan Wagner, Mike Russell, Christopher Mitten, and pioneering indie cartoonist Matt Wagner (MageGrendel).  The introduction was written by Eric M. Esquivel, writer of Freelancers for Boom! Studios.

“The support from our friends and colleagues on this one was tremendous,” Rich continued. “I think in a few years time, people will look back at the pin-up gallery and be shocked by what an impressive and varied list of people it is. Lots of up-and-comers in there with the more established professionals.”

It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat collects six issues, but it’s made up of several shorter stories. “After the first trade paperback’s long, continuous narrative, I wanted to write superhero adventures that were done in one or two issues. Like most soap opera capes-and-cowls comics, there are still bits and pieces that connect them all, but the intention was to allow any new reader to jump in at just about anytime and go along with what we were doing. Really, you can read The World is Flat without ever having glanced at Dark Streets, Snap City and know what’s going on.

It Girl and the Atomics, Round Two: The World is Flat will be released by Image Comics on October 2. It has 168 color pages, retails for $14.99, and sports an all-new cover by Michael & Laura Allred.

A CAR THAT (MOSTLY) SPED

NOW IN THEATERS...

New movie reviews!

* Don Jon, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's slick directorial debut. You will be asked to believe that porn is better than Scarlett Johansson. I remain unconvinced. There is nothing better than Scarlett Johansson.

* Inequality for All, a documentary about the widening gulf between the 1% and the working poor, as well as the disappearing middle class. Luckily, your host for this sobering journey is the affable Robert Reich.

* Rush, a middle-of-the-pack racecar movie from Ron Howard.

At the Oregonian, we're shaking things up a bit. Online, the column I write will be broken up and the individual movies listed on their own; the Friday paper will still print them all together.

This week, Portlanders can see...

* Cutie and the Boxer, a documentary about two Japanese artists who have been married and living in New York for four decades.

Salma, the true story of an Indian poet who transformed confinement into art.

* A Tribute to Les Blank: Three nights of Southern culture, music, and food.

I know also have a dedicated writer's page at the paper. Check it out!

Don Jon offers its own proof.

I NEED AN EVERLASTING LOVE (WAIT FOR IT, WAIT FOR IT...)

There have been some updates to my shop on this site.

I've added a couple of limited items:

* one complete set of the original Love the Way You Love issues

* A bundle with my second The Everlasting and the last copies of my self-published short story "Chevelu."

I only just got a box of The Everlasting back in stock, and so it seemed a good way to start off. They will be in the store indefinitely on their own, but this is the last chance to get "Chevelu" in this format.

Original color file for the The Everlasting cover, art by Chynna Clugston Flores.

I also sold most of my It Girl and the Atomic #1s at Rose City Comic Con, so each of the bundles with the first five issues is now limited to one more sale. That's all I have left!

I expect my copies of the second It Girl trade paperback any day now, and as soon as they are here, I will have them up on the site. If I can get them up in the next couple of days, I'll take preorders to mail for arrival on release day, next Wednesday, October 2nd.

IMAGINE THE SWAN

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my table at Rose City Comic Con this past weekend and chatted or bought books. It was a good show, and the From the Gutters panel went really well.

Yet, of all the good times had, one thing--or more importantly, one person--really stands out.

For my money, the little girl who came to the show dressed as It Girl was the highlight of the convention.  If not my career.

Her name is Melanie*, and her favorite comic is It Girl and the Atomics . She asked her mother to make her the costume, and her mother kindly complied. The whole family came down to the convention, including Melanie's younger sister, who was cosplaying as Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony .

I can't imagine I'll ever receive a bigger compliment than this one. When I cast back to when I was Melanie's age, and to what comics and cartoons and everything meant to me, and how the stuff I read back then sparked my imagination, I can think of no greater accomplishment than to pass on that kind of excitement to a child through my work.

Most days, it seems like comics fandom and professionals alike spend the majority of time complaining about what bothers them instead of celebrating the things that excite them. It drives me nuts. If we put as much energy into spreading the word about the good as we do promoting the bad, we'd all be a lot healthier.

Melanie is the best reminder of why I make comics. She reminds me why I read comics. If it's not the same for you, you might want to consider another field. Even the stuff that maybe isn't for her right now, hopefully when she's older her experience with It Girl will eventually lead her to A Boy and a Girl and then maybe 12 Reasons Why I Love Her and a life-long relationship with comics and reading in general.

She wasn't just the star of my show, either. An hour didn't go by on Saturday or Sunday when someone--including people I had never met before--didn't come by and ask me if I had seen the tiny It Girl running around. Her enthusiasm was contagious.

* I changed Melanie's name because, when I met her, it didn't occur to me that i might write this post. Hopefully she and her parents won't mind my writing about this encounter.

ANTHEM FOR A LOST CAUSE

A couple more plugs for A Boy and a Girl, my book with the effervescent Natalie Nourigat.

 * First up, Graphic Novel Reporter has included it on their list of "Essential Reading for the Season," their Fall 2013 round-up.

* The Online Eccentric Librarian gives us a glowing notice. Here is an excerpt:

"A Boy and a Girl is a deceptively simple premise: Before Sunrise meets Blade Runner.
The plot is intelligently written and definitely worthy of several reads to catch all the nuances a reader may have missed in the first or second reading.
The artwork has clean lines and is two color blue and black/white.  The action is easy to follow and the characters have bright, open, emotional expressions that make the book a joy to read."

* And Comics Worth Reading gives us her usual thoughtful analysis. Johanna had her problems with the book, but that's a nice, fair review if ever there was one.

"Nourigat’s characters are attractive and expressive.
The 'just like our world but with robots' future is occasionally used to surprise the reader, since she doesn’t know the rules of exactly what exists in that culture."

GIVIN EM WHAT THEY LOVE

This week for the Oregonian, I review two documentaries--the art-themed Herb and Dorothy 50X50 and Rise from Ashes, about the Rwandan bicycle team--alongside a revival run of Tarantino's Elmore Leonard adaptation, Jackie Brown. Read it here.

WATCH IT AT HOME...

* Autumn Sonatathe final film of Ingrid Bergman, and shockingly her only one with Ingmar Bergman.

* Between Us, a smart indie drama with Julia Stiles and Taye Diggs.

* Going Hollywood, a charming pre-Code musical with Bing Crosby and Marion Davies.

Current Soundtrack: Justin Timblerlake, "TKO"

JOINED UP TALKING

A couple of quick links...

A GOOD WEEKEND FOR THE ROSES [UPDATED]

So, Rose City Comic Con is this weekend, and I am a special guest.

I'll be there both days, at table E-01, selling books and chatting and other such shenanigans. My table is right next to Joëlle Jones, so you can meet us both at the same time.

I'll also be part of the panel for From the Gutters, which is happening on Saturday, 2 p.m., in room 4. Joe Keatinge has agreed to come and moderate the event for us, and we have a couple of special guests lined up, likely to be announced...edit: here it is!

Joining us special for the panel are legendary Legendary Comics editor Bob Schreck and Mage/Grendel creator Matt Wagner! Tell 'em more, Joe...!

I've also added a signing at the Oni Press table at 5:00 pm on Saturday. If you can't find me at my own spot, we'll be there! They might also have more of my prose works, I don't have stock on a lot of the earlier books.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FROM THE GUTTERS

Jamie S. Rich hosts new comics interview webseries 'From the Gutters'; sneak peek set for Rose City Comic Con Sept. 21

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 13, 2013

More info: Ryan McCluskey & Martin Vavra, fromthegutters.show@gmail.com

Writer/editor Jamie S. Rich is hosting "From the Gutters" -- a new original online show featuring in-depth video interviews with comic-book industry professionals. The nine-episode first season debuts on YouTube on Oct. 4 -- with a special sneak-preview event set for Portland's Rose City Comic Con on Sept. 21.

To see preview videos, visit the show's YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/fromthegutters/.

ABOUT 'FROM THE GUTTERS'

Produced by Martin Vavra and Ryan McCluskey, "From the Gutters" will begin as a weekly series, with its initial season consisting of nine episodes, each spotlighting an individual comic book personality.

"From the Gutters" Season One will feature a diverse collection of industry vets and on-the-rise superstars -- including Eisner Award-winners Matt Wagner ("The Tower Chronicles"), Becky Cloonan ("True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys"), and colorist Dave Stewart ("Hellboy"). Established behind-the-scenes pros including Bob Schreck (editor, Legendary Comics) and Eric Stephenson (publisher of Image Comics, as well as the writer of "Nowhere Men") will share the spotlight with newer talent including Ming Doyle (artist of "Mara") and such indie pioneers as Mike Allred ("Madman"), Michael Avon Oeming ("Powers"), and Ted Naifeh ("Courtney Crumrin").

Each interview will be serialized in edited segments, followed by the full-length session for those looking to go deeper into the comic-book process.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION TEAM

The show is produced and directed by McCluskey, with camerawork and editing done by co-producer Vavra. Each has a long resume in front of and behind the camera. The pair hatched "From the Gutters" as a way to learn more about an art form they both loved.

"Living in Portland, Oregon," McCluskey said, "we regularly bumped elbows with comic-book creators. I’ve been an avid comic book fan for years. Getting a chance to have an ‘All Access’ pass with these creators was a dream come true. Generous and amazing…every single guest.”

ABOUT HOST JAMIE S. RICH

McCluskey and Vavra approached Jamie S. Rich, veteran graphic-novel writer and editor they knew socially. "We'd have drinks with Jamie and he'd tell us a bunch of stories about his years in the comic-book industry," McCluskey said. "He knew everyone and had an opinion about everything. Someone needed to stick a microphone in his face."

Rich began his career in comics as an editor at Dark Horse Comics before taking over as editor-in-chief of Oni Press. He has since established himself as a writer on books that include "12 Reasons Why I Love Her" and "It Girl and the Atomics." His next major release is the original graphic novel “A Boy and a Girl,” drawn by Natalie Nourigat and set for publication by Oni Press on November 27.

"My friend and collaborator Joëlle Jones had been joking for a while that I needed to do a podcast or some kind of history about comic-book creators," Rich said. "It was kind of a no-brainer when Ryan and Martin approached me. I had grown tired of the treadmill of comics press. It's all too often a hype machine: Promote this one book that you're doing right now. It got so impersonal -- most interviewers wouldn't even ask me how my day was going. At the same time, most readers and curious laymen I'd run into had very little idea of how a comic book was made. 'From the Gutters' was a chance to change that."

ABOUT THE SHOW'S APPROACH

In addition to discussing what inspires each creator to do what they do, each episode will showcase the art process.

"We look over Oeming's shoulder as he inks," Vavra said, "and get a breakdown from Dave Stewart of how a digitally colored page comes together. Each session is practically a master class. It's 'Inside the Comic Book Creator's Studio,' in a sense."

"That's not just figurative," McCluskey said. "When we can, we go to the artist's space an see what they do and where they do it. That means looking at the art on the walls at Bob Schreck or Mike Allred's house, or getting a cooking lesson from Matt Wagner. It's not just about ink on paper -- it's about the whole lifestyle."

ABOUT THE PREMIERE

"From the Gutters" will debut on a dedicated YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/fromthegutters/ on Friday, Oct. 4, following an official unveiling at Rose City Comic Con ( http://rosecitycomiccon.com ) on Saturday, Sept. 21.

IT'S THE NEW STYLE

I seem to have a hard time managing my non-deadline reviews these days, so it's a quiet week in terms of movie write-ups around here.

But if you live in the Portland area, you might want to check my Oregonian column, particularly if you're a fan of Charlie Ahearn and Wild Style.

See the full write-up here, including a bit about the Trent Harris retrospective and a dreadful locally made documentary.
